Touch returns this season with apparently more thrill and character development. I'll be the judge of that (along with tv.com, imdb.com and a bunch of other sites). This special two-hour episode brings back our old pals Jake and Martin who team up with Amelia's mom Lucy to find the missing girl and possibly stop Aster Corps. We meet more of the 36 special people, get an insight of the company and also follow a murderous dude who seems to be killing the 36s because they were in God's way or something.
After the team up in “Event Horizon”, our
protagonists head to a small online news site run by a friend of Martin. One of
the employees is a hacker and aids the gang in their investigation. I’ll hazard
that this will be the basic formula for the rest of the season. In the latter part
“Closer” Martin focuses on getting in contact with a 36 who has to unwillingly
find and submit algorithms to further the company’s success at his
disadvantage. We get a little bit of espionage as Martin breaks into a top exec’s
room and copies his files. Unlike the last season, we have continuous sub-plots
which somewhat influence the events in the main storyline.
So overall, the show has become more animated but
still carries the theme of clandestine patterns within numbers. This magic
still captivated me and it kept me watching till the end. It ditched most of
the emotional development between the characters in favor of more action and
suspense. The ratings however seemed to slip and the series might, I repeat
MIGHT have to go to the graveyard (along with a host of short-lived NBC shows).
Unless of course if Touch continues its
dramatic storytelling and the rest of the season. Personally, I hope this show
goes on for a while, and that’s mainly because of the Knowing vibe it carries. It has great potential to stand out as one
of the more sunny serials on modern television.
